A time when bathing could get you into hot water!

Personal cleanliness is an important part of many religions, including Islam. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Islamic countries were building elaborate and beautiful bathhouses, complete with warm and hot baths, and steam rooms. Bathing was an integral part of their religion and society.

In contrast, Christians at this time considered bathing to be sinful, probably in direct response to Muslims being clean. So during the Spanish Inquisition, when the Roman Catholic Church was repressively maintaining its dominance, Moors who converted to Christianity were not allowed to bathe. And an accusation of being “known to bathe” was considered evidence of heresy and could lead to burning at the stake!

Hopefully, we’ll never move back to that trend! Because I would be miserable without my daily dose of soapy goodness (not to mention mighty stinky!).
